Merry Cinco De Mayo!

In honor of Cino De Mayp, this post is about Latin comic book characters.

DC Comics has their share of Latin/Mexican superheroes. Take Vibe for example. He had a really decent power, he can shake things, but had a crappy attitude. Did the writers really think readers wanted to read about a cocky Latin dude with a chip on his shoulders? Nu uh. No me any way. So DC did what any entertainment company would do to a poorly developed character... They killed him.

Then DC introduced Wildcat II, a Latina who donned the Wildcat costumed when the original Wildcat was injured during Crisis on Infinite Earths. I liked her from the start. She was tough, sassy and had a Diva type attitude my mother would appreciate. I was also happy when she joined Infinity Inc., Only to have the book canceled a few years later. DC needed to make a dying book (Eclipso) cool again, so they created "The Shadow Fighters", which had a few of the Infinity Inc. cast offs on the team. In classic DC tradition, they killed her off too... Nice...

Now DC has introduced Blue Beetle III. After Blue Beetle II died, the Scarab found it's way to Jamie Reyes. A teen Latino who seems to have more power than Ted Cord when he was Blue Beetle. I'm reluctant to like Blue Beetle because of DC's ability to axe any Latino character I like. My only saving grace is that Gail Simone is writing his monthly comic, and doing it brilliantly. I have a huge girl crush on Gail, and that's quite a compliment coming from a gay man. She's brilliant and doesn't use god awful stereotype Latin puns to make Blue Beetle cool.

I hope Blue Beetle makes it to the big leagues because I think he's got the goods.
